The Master Programme provides a theoretical base on health and health systems, focusing on methodology and training in different research methods. Our uniqueness is the emphasis in innovation and technological support and services in global health.
One of the strengths of the class is their broad variety in educational backgrounds, representing Bachelor degrees in areas like Health Science, Nursing, Midwife, Public Health, Technological fields and others.

Tine Camilla Norderhaug, Pushpanjali Shakya and Prince Oppong-Darko have just had their second lecture, and are confident that this Master’s study will teach them useful skills they are eager to use to improve public health.

The three students are good examples of the wide variety of backgrounds. Prince, from Ghana, has a BA in Public Health and had a position as Information Officer in the Ghana Health Service. Pushpanjali has a background as an Intensie Care Unit (ICU) nurse and nurse educator in patient education and staff development induction program. Tine Camilla has a Bachelor degree from the Norwegian University of Sports Science in Oslo, and has worked as a Red Cross Youth Delegate in Lesotho.

They share a common goal: to improve public health where it is needed most. For Pushpanjali, this translates into a wish to help the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease in her home country. Prince envisions the implementation of more user-based technology in the health care system which will make help available for more people and overcome travel distances. Tine is not sure yet what her final focus will be, but is confident that she will find it in the course of the study.

They are looking forward to learning about research methods, statistics, public health and innovation in health and many other topics, as they are sure these will give them the necessary tools to improve health services where it is most needed.

All three mention the international student environment both at NTNU as a whole and the Master’s program in particular as a reason for choosing NTNU. The atmosphere sure feels good with such a variety of people, backgrounds, and expertise to be exchanged!

2015 Students in the Master Program Public Health – Global Health

Elisabeth Darj is Professor in Global Health at NTNU and the head of the Programme Board. Darj has built this Master Programme over the last two years, and she is very enthusiastic to see the new students at our campus.
“This student group is such a nice mix from various countries and backgrounds and they seem to get along well together directly from the start, as they have a common interest in this education. During the coming two years the students will get knowledge and skills of how to approach the global burden of ill-health, with different research methods, collaboration and insights in the complexity of health systems and policies. This program is unique, as one of the courses ‘Innovation in Global Health’ focus on how to use new technology to improve health care. And they will hopefully have a lot of fun, meeting new friends and enjoy Trondheim and Norway.”

We believe these students will be at the forefront of what the Faculty of Medicine stands for: “Health for a better world!”

We, the Master students of the Faculty of Medicine, participated in our final graduation ceremony today. It was a very special moment to be once again in the auditorium where everything started two years ago.

Tore Romunstad, the Head of Section for Student and Academic Affairs, welcomed us upon our arrival. Then, the Dean Bjørn Gustafsson wished us a great future. Maybe our studies at NTNU are over, but we will always be a part of this institution.

Every course was then called down on stage. Every graduating student received a rose and congratulations from the Dean and the chief of the Master Program Council. Finally, Thea Johanne Gjerdingen, the president of SOMA (the Student Organization for Master Students at NTNU) in 2013/14, held a moving speech.

Thea, as everyone of us, is graduating after two years of hard work and challenges, but these years have been full of great experiences and satisfactions. We all had the chance to meet and become friend with people coming from all over the world. We worked side by side getting to learn the processes of life and how to take care of them. As Thea said, “we came to NTNU for a degree, but got so much more”.

During the ceremony the artists of Trondheim kammermusikkfestival musically pleased us and we thanks them for their participation. After the ceremony, we all enjoyed cake and coffee at MTFS telling each other goodbye and good luck for the last time. We want to thank the Faculty and the organizers of this event, and we hope that this event was the first of a future long tradition in graduation ceremonies for Master students at the Faculty of Medicine, NTNU.

There will be a special emphasis on innovation and technological support and services in global health. One of the courses will provide an understanding on how technology is needed and can be used in supporting complicated health challenges. In addition we will focus on global health issues such as

• the global burden of diseases
• reproductive health
• nutrition
• domestic violence
• communicable diseases
• life-style diseases
• ecological aspects of the environment influencing health.

A separate course will cover health management and economy, health systems, and human rights perspectives.

Admission to the MSc requires a bachelor’s degree in Health (e.g. Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Social Eduction) or in Technology/Engineering subjects with relevance for health care. Other relevant disciplines may be accepted after an individual evaluation of the applicant’s qualifications.

The programme will start in August 2015. The application deadline is 15 January (for international applicants) and 15 April (for Nordic applicants).

On Monday the 19th of August, the Faculty of Medicine welcomed the new master students, including also exchange students taking master’s courses.

Bilyd, the choir of female medical students, started the show with songs and were followed by the master of ceremonies, Vice-dean of Education Hilde Grimstad.

Dean Stig Slørdahl welcomed the students and presented the university, the faculty and some its various research groups.

Tore Romundstad, head of the Section of Student and Academic Affairs, introduced the students to the student advisers they are likely to meet at their time at the Faculty of Medicine

Student program representative for master students, Heidi Kleven and faculty trust representative Jarle Møller encouraged the new students to get involved with the various activities and groups at the university and to help shape the Faculty by joining in the student democracy.

The student organisation for master students at the Faculty of Medicine, SOMA, invited the students to join in for the Buddy Week to get to know their classmates and the other master programmes.

Bilyd then finished the show with “Come on Eileen” before the students were served lunch.
